Four Things Your Resume Should Do
Your resume package consists of your resume, LinkedIn profile, cover letter, follow-up thank you letter, and your ATS score. Your resume is an indispensable part of your career strategy and it will work hard for you if it has these capabilities:
(1) Back to the future! When ATS has a new opportunity and begins searching through its resume bank, your resume should be a hit!
Example:
Last year you applied for a job and were passed over but your resume still has a heartbeat in the employer’s ATS system. A new, unadvertised position is opening up and you would be a great fit. The hiring manager runs a search using ATS. Your resume should be attractive to ATS so that it appears in the search results and lands on the hiring manager’s desk.
(2) Pass the cut when submitted to ATS as a new candidate
Example:
You have become proactive and are submitting your resume for advertised jobs. Hundreds of resumes are showing up and being processed into the employer’s ATS. Because your resume was ATS optimized, it should show up in ATS search results as a match for the current job being screened for.
(3) Pass the six-second test.
Example:
Recruiters are “jumpy.” They have access to tens of thousands of resumes and for any given job they in all likelihood have more than a hundred applications. Qualified candidates are the recruiter’s “work product” which they submit to hiring managers. Passing along bad candidates can end a recruiting career. Typically, the recruiter does a six-second scan looking for a reason to delete your resume from contention. Your resume needs to get you past that six-second scan.
(4) Bring the WOW factor.
Example:
Your resume passed the six-second scan and was not rejected. Now a deeper, human engaged read is coming. Your resume needs to jump out and immediately show that you are the one! [You are about to be called for an interview.]
