The Three Levels of Beliefs

Our beliefs have varying levels of emotional intensity and they possess the power to change our actions. We can pinpoint at least three categories of beliefs based on their ability to influence action in you. Understanding each of the three categories will empower you to create healthy and positive changes in your life by beginning to adjust your beliefs.

1. Opinions are something we feel relatively certain about, but the certainty is only temporary and can be changed easily. For example, you might think that the head of your company’s accounting department is not qualified for his position, but your opinion may change quickly when you see how effectively he manages his staff.

2. A belief, on the other hand, is formed when you develop a much larger base of reference, one that’s often associated with strong emotions and based on experience. Beliefs can create such a level of certainty that they close people off to new ideas. For example, some people believe that money equals success. Other people may have a different — yet equally passionate — belief as to what success truly means.

3. A conviction, however, eclipses a belief, primarily because of the emotional intensity a person links to the idea. A person holding a conviction feels so certain that he or she will be completely resistant to new input, often to the point of obsession. One of the best things you can do to create mastery in any area of your life is to raise a belief to the level of conviction. Convictions are at the core of what motivates you in life.

Conviction, because of the passion it inspires in us, has the power to drive you to action and push you through all kinds of obstacles. For example, the conviction to never let yourself become out of shape will compel you to make consistently healthy lifestyle choices, empowering you to get more enjoyment out of your life in the long run. The conviction that you are an intelligent and resourceful person can help steer you through incredibly tough times.

So how can you reinforce a belief and turn it into a conviction that will help you make a positive, lasting change in your life?

  • Identify the basic belief that you want to elevate.
  • Reinforce your belief by adding powerful references. To create a conviction around a healthy lifestyle, you might research the medical consequences of gaining weight. Then talk to people who have lost weight and kept it off. The more references you develop, the stronger your conviction.
  • Then find a triggering event — or make one of your own. You need to raise the emotional intensity of the belief. If you were trying to give up smoking, you might visit the intensive care wing of a hospital to see the first-hand effects of emphysema.
  • Finally, take action. Each action you take strengthens your commitment and raises the level of your emotional intensity and conviction.

How to Create a Custom LinkedIn URL in 3 Easy Steps

Make your LinkedIn address easy to remember!

Make sure your LinkedIn URL enhances your personal brand and doesn’t detract from it!

In today’s job market, it’s not enough to just have a top notch resume. Employers also expect you to have a polished online professional brand that aligns with your resume and current job goals. In fact, according to a recent study most recruiters are using social media to attract — and vet — potential candidates for their open positions. As a result, it’s important to not only develop a fleshed out online profile that you can include on your resume but to also customize its public web address so it’s easy for people to find and connect with you. That means you need a personal LinkedIn URL.

Follow the LinkedIn profile tips below to customize your public LinkedIn profile URL to promote your professional brand.

Step One:

Log into your LinkedIn account and click Me > View Profile from the upper right-hand corner of the page.

Step 2:

On the upper right-hand side of your profile page, click Edit your public profile.

Step Three:

This will open a new window called Public profile settings. On the right-hand side of this page, you will see a section called Edit public profile URL. Under this section header, you will find your current URL next to an icon that looks like a pencil. Click on the pencil to edit your URL. I recommend using your name, as it appears on your resume, or a combination of your name and profession to maintain a consistent brand.

Make sure to hit save and that’s it! You’ve now created a personal LinkedIn URL.

What does Nestle’s Qwik Chocolate Powder and Positive Thinking have in common?

Reverse Engineer Toxic Thinking

Chances are when you were a kid, at some point you enjoyed adding Nestle’s Qwik chocolate powder to some cold milk and loved it. Using the frequently misunderstood reasoning of positive thinking, one might conclude that just going for a big spoon full of the powdered chocolate would be even better!

Sorry! Life doesn’t work that way for chocolate powder or for positive thinking. Disclosure: I am a huge fan of positive thinking and could not envision a successful life without it. Unfortunately, there have been books, seminars, and course promotions pitching the idea that it’s your own fault if you are not wildly successful, and through simply positive visualization,  success will come to you. This is no more true than if you placed a pile of money on a table and visualized the pile growing. Folks, it’s not going to happen!

Guess who reads your resume first!

Robot showing your resume to recruiter!

Here is a little food for thought about who is going to read your resume!

On the way to your new job…

Before you can be hired, you must be interviewed;

Before you can be interviewed your resume must make it into the interview stack;

Before your resume makes it into the interview stack, it must pass the ATS screen.

Why do over 87% of employers now use ATS screens?

Well, thank the internet!

Finding out about job openings is easier than ever before, and applying is easier than ever before. Back in the day, you could send 50 job applications by USPS for about $25, or overnight via FEDEX for about $1000. Neither one worked if you were broke!

Today, if you can copy and paste, you can send 100’s even 1000’s of job applications on the internet for FREE. Consequently, employers are besieged with 100’s of applications for every job offered and the majority are not qualified. There is a pervasive world mindset, that if it’s free to apply why not take a chance? Free lotteries, free drawings, free coupons  and free job applications.

Resume out of date? How to avoid the rejection pile!

Avoiding the rejection pile…

Why you need to delete the Objective Statement:

The Hiring Manager is not there to give you a job! Their task is to attract the best possible human assets to fill job requirements. So, job seekers, they don’t really care what your objective is! The questions you want to answer are:

“What do you bring to the table in terms of hard skills and what experience born of accomplishments can you offer the employer? What are the likely results of hiring you?

Replace the Objective Statement with a Professional Summary

The Professional Summary is a one or two paragraph snapshot of your qualifications and accomplishments. Not your job history. Not your education. Emphasis on accomplishments.

Always think in terms of quantifying. Anyone can say “excelled at last job” but “successfully hit sales quotas 100% of the time and exceeded goals by 20% in the last 6 months” is much more powerful. Remember, you can even do this if your position doesn’t involve numbers.

Jiu-Jitsu and the Art of Beating ATS Hiring Systems

Artificial Intelligence and your future…

* Jiu-Jitsu has its roots in the Japanese system of defeating a stronger opponent by using their own strength against them.

Operators of Fourth Generation ATS systems have largely succeeded in convincing employers that job applicants can be accurately and more thoroughly evaluated by using Artificial Intelligence for deep resume and social analysis, all made possible because of the new transparency.

You may be surprised to learn that companies are building massive profiles on you and most of the world population!

In an ideal scenario, the hiring manager can tell ATS exactly the skill set he is looking for, and you will materialize for an interview after ATS has decided “You’re the one!”  But what if you are one of the other 99 applicants who were discarded, and what if you actually have the better skills? The hiring manager will never know because he will never interview you, thanks to ATS.
